The Canisius High School community is mourning the loss of Seth Kibler ’20, a standout swimmer, Xavier University graduate, and beloved member of the Crusader family, who passed away on July 15, 2026, following a battle with cancer. He was 23 years old.
News of Seth’s passing has brought profound sadness to classmates, teammates, coaches, teachers, and friends who remember him not only for his athletic achievements but also for his character, determination, and positive spirit. His death marks another heartbreaking chapter for the Kibler family, as Seth passed away on the one-year anniversary of the loss of his mother, Catherine L. Kibler. He was also predeceased by his father, Michael A. Kibler.
In a statement, Canisius High School President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., expressed the school’s sorrow, describing Seth as a deeply valued member of the Canisius community. School officials extended their prayers and condolences to Seth’s twin brother, Clayton Kibler ’20, and all who knew and loved him.
A gifted swimmer, Seth built an impressive athletic legacy during his time at Canisius High School. He was a key member of the Crusaders’ successful swimming program and earned recognition in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association All-Catholic Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Alongside his twin brother Clayton, Seth was named the team’s co-Rookie of the Year in 2017 before later earning the title of Most Valuable Swimmer in 2019.
One of his most memorable performances came during the 2019 All-Catholic Championships, where he captured gold medals in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly while also helping lead the victorious 200 medley relay team.
Following high school, Seth continued his swimming career at Xavier University, where he graduated last year. Those who knew him describe a young man who approached both academics and athletics with dedication and resilience.
As family and friends reflect on Seth’s life, they remember a talented athlete, devoted brother, and compassionate friend whose impact reached far beyond the pool. Though his life was far too short, his legacy of perseverance, excellence, and kindness will endure.
